Buckhorn Island State Park
We went for a little winter hike this past weekend in Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island. I lived on Grand Island up until about 4 years ago, and we have always enjoyed taking the short drive across the island to the park. It's a great place to go hiking, fishing, kayaking, etc. in the summer, and in the winter it still makes for beautiful scenery.
Surprisingly, many of my friends who are from the island actually didn't know that this place existed. This summer we hope to get out more to do a lot of hiking and fly fishing here. I highly recommend Buckhorn to anyone who loves the outdoors!
Also, for those who love bird watching, Buckhorn also has an Bird Conservation Area. You can see by our two little duck friends that the birds are still out in full force in the winter time!
As you may be able to tell from looking at the pictures, it was freezing when we were there. Here are a list of the layers that I was wearing as to stay nice and toasty warm while being outside for a significant amount of time:
- Base layer: tank top, t-shirt and leggings
- Middle layer: comfy baggy jeans and a North Face 1/4 zip fleece shirt, similar HERE
- Top layer: warm hat, gloves, and scarf, The North Face Denali hoodie (so warm and cozy), found HERE
- Thick socks and good insulated boots
Staying warm is all about smart layering!
